 Serpentine Drive
Belt
Just what is a Serpentine Drive Belt?
A Serpentine Drive Belt is just what the name implies-a continuous
loop belt that snakes its way through and around your engine compartment
to drive power to major engine parts. If your car is relatively new, it
probably has a Serpentine Drive Belt connecting the power steering,
engine, water pump, air conditioner and alternator. It's definitely
worth having this type of drive belt checked periodically because if it
fails, your car won't run.
What are the benefits of replacing it?
Miles of worry-free driving, so don't let a broken belt stop your car
in its tracks.
When does it need to be replaced?
Generally, the Serpentine Drive Belt should be replaced whenever it
shows signs of extensive wear.
- If the sides are slick or glazed, it could slip or cause
overheating.
- If the underside is peeling or missing a section, it can cause rough
operation.
- If there's a greasy build-up, it can soften or rot the belt.
- If it's cracked or split, it should be replaced.
Your Grease Monkey manager will check the resource manual for your car
manufacturer's recommended replacement interval.
